Maryland has come up with a School-to-Careers system called Career Connections. This program is locally and community based, to further student's education by preparing them for entry into a formal workplace by providing them with needed skills and credentials. This new system of linking students, schools, and workplaces emphasizes all standards and relevance to learning.
Cooperative Implementation
The state is divided into twelve different regions grouping the smaller populated areas, for planning and administrative purposes. Both Howard and Carroll Counties, as a result, are working cooperatively to implement the Career Connections program.
How does Career Connections work?
In the elementary and middle school levels there will be age-appropriate activities to make students aware of the different careers and work settings. Numerous opportunities will be offered by high school graduation, for students to learn first-hand about the working world. These opportunities will range from school-based enterprises, job shadows, to actual structured career preparation activities, which could be a paid working experience.
